Player.hu is a Hungarian online media and entertainment platform that offers a wide range of content, including news, sports, music, movies, TV shows, and games. The platform was founded in 2008 and since then has become one of the leading digital media outlets in Hungary.

In April 2018 the company implemented web push notifications.

“[When implementing web push on player.hu] we wanted to engage our returning users/readers further. We also wanted to get more clicks in general and promote certain articles specifically.”

Orsolya Sziklai,
Marketing Manager at Player.hu

👥 Subscribers

The company has collected over 300K web push subscribers, more than 80% of which used a mobile device to subscribe.

📝 Goal

To boost the engagement of returning users and at the same time to promote and increase viewership of particular articles on the site.

💡 Solution

On average, Player.hu sent 45 mass campaigns per month in Q1, 2023.

In addition, to achieve its goal, Player.hu tracks which categories subscribers read and if the user doesn’t return to the site for a few days sends an automatic push notification directing them to the last category they visited.

Besides this, the company greets every new subscriber with an automatic welcome notification.

💡It is a good strategy for a publisher that sends less than 3 mass campaigns per day to enable automation scenarios. People who have been on the site in the last 48h, for example, can be excluded from receiving automatic notifications.

🎯 Results

During the first three months of 2023 Player.hu received over 119,000 visits to the website through mass campaigns and over 11,000 through automation.

Share of clicks generated through mass campaigns vs automation

The average CTR of mass campaigns is 1.08% and the average CTR of automation scenarios is 5.57%. Web push automation is a good tool for generating website traffic, so it’s worth implementing them in addition to sending mass campaigns.

“After we reached a number of subscribers (I think at least 50K) we saw a result, especially at an individual article level.”

Orsolya Sziklai,
Marketing Manager at Player.hu

📢 Client’s opinion

“I think when web push communication is done right it's a great opportunity to combine with other means of communication. It can be however tricky to not be too pushy or annoying to scare away users.
Overall we like using the PushPushGo platform, it's cost-effective, the support is great and it's simple to use.”

Orsolya Sziklai,
Marketing Manager at Player.hu
